Emanuele Berti

Co-Investigator

I am a Professor at Johns Hopkins University.

My research focuses on gravitational-wave astronomy and tests of general relativity – in particular, on “black hole spectroscopy” (i.e., identifying black holes from their gravitational-wave spectra) and on “black hole demography” (i.e., finding out the astrophysical formation scenarios of the observed binary merger events). I am also interested in developing the science case of next-generation gravitational-wave detectors, such as the Einstein Telescope, Cosmic Explorer, and LISA.

Within the Simons Collaboration on Black Holes and Strong Gravity, I am the Johns Hopkins PI and a member of the Collaboration’s Executive Committee.

I am a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation (ISGRG), a Simons Investigator in Physics, and the recipient of the 2023 APS Richard A. Isaacson Award in Gravitational-Wave Science. I am a Member of the KITP Advisory Board, and in the past, I served as Divisional Associate Editor of Physical Review Letters (2017-2023), Chair of the APS Division of Gravitational Physics (2016-2019), and President of the ISGRG (2022-2025).
