Daniel Holz
Co-Investigator
I am a PI on the Simons Collaboration, and a professor at the University of Chicago in the Departments of Physics, Astronomy & Astrophysics, the Enrico Fermi Institute, and the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics. I am a member of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) collaboration; my research focuses on black holes, gravitational waves, and cosmology. I am also Chair of the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (which sets the Doomsday Clock) and founding director of the UChicago Existential Risk Laboratory (XLab), an interdisciplinary effort focused on understanding and mitigating existential risks, including nuclear war, climate change, and AI-fueled disinformation. I have received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, a Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, and the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics and the Gruber Prize (as a member of LIGO). I was selected as a Kavli Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences and an APS Fellow. My recent work uses gravitational-wave detections to constrain physics and astrophysics, including testing for deviations from general relativity, understanding astrophysical formation channels, and the development of standard siren cosmology.
